Medallion Mayhem...

Welcome to Monogram, opps, I mean Medallion Mayhem! I've been a little busy in my kitchen this morning as you can see from the pictures above. Yes, I'm sure you have also noticed that I have done some redecorating on my blog as well. I hope you like it and I think it's a little bit easier to read, I hope! Let me know what you think. Let's jump right in to the mayhem!

I have always loved medallions, it's my preferred shape... I think we all have a shape that we are aesthetically drawn to and mine happens to be the medallion. Yes, I know, it's "technically" a circle (most of the time), but it's so much more complex than a simple circle. To me, a medallion is a wonderful balance of fabulous grandiosity, stopped in it's track by a perfectly contained round circle. Medallion's have fabulous raised texture and a natural depth of shading because of the texture and design, which is hard to find all wrapped in one design component. The medallion is an architectural element as well, which appeals to me as well.

As I look around, I realize that I have a medallion design somewhere in almost every room in my home. In my guest bedroom, hangs a wonderful large iron medallion.

In the past, it was rare if I found a medallion design but today, medallions are popping up everywhere and not hard to find at all. I love this beautiful wall medallion from Horchow...

If you too are drawn to medallions, think about mixing up various sizes and colors of medallions and grouping them together in a circle, plus sign or diamond pattern similar to the grouping I did for my kitchen wall. I purchased all of the medallions below at Hobby Lobby at 50% off (prices ranged from $2.50-$12.00 after discount).

If you are interested in doing a grouping, just lay your medallions on the floor and pre-arrange to make sure you are balancing colors and sizes equally. The other idea to consider is using large ceiling medallions to hang on your wall, like these below suggested by DIY...

You can order these unfinished large ceiling medallions, like the ones above online at the Architectural Depot. How fabulous would it be to paint them in rich colors to compliment your decor or do a faux painting technique like crackling, patina, gold leaf, aged stone or a distressed leather look. So many possibilities here if you like the architectural element that a medallion look can provide! Check out Lowe's and Home Depot for less expensive fiberglass ceiling medallions that can be painted.
