Ruffled Dress Lampshade {tutorial}
I am submitting this project in this month's Ucreate "Create with Me" project. July's project is "Lamp Makeovers". I adore Kari and Ucreate and I have been wanting to participate in one of her monthly projects for quite sometime, such a fun idea!
So what did I do?
I turned my daughter's old adorable ruffled dress into a fun and whimsical lampshade for her bedroom. Here's a picture of an almost identical dress that my daughter wore when she was 2 (couldn't find a pic with the exact dress)!
(oh yes, how could we EVER forget The Wiggles!)
I have been searching the stores forever for something so fun and whimsical for the lamp on my daughter's nightstand. In the end, all I really had to do was look in my storage closet! Sadly, or in this case, happily, I have saved almost every dress that my daughter has ever worn(good thing I have just one munchkin)...
I used the same technique from a previous project posting that I did on how to cover drum shades with fabric (thank you to Kari for mentioning my previous tutorial as one of the project ideas!).
Covering a drum shade is by for the easiest type of shade to cover because it's fairly even.
I then cut each ruffled layer of my daughter's dress (*sniffle*) into three wide strips. If you want to do something similar but do not have a ruffled dress, think about ruffled aprons or simply cut three wide coordinating strips of fabric from old dresses and sew ruffles/gathers.
I then used a glue gun and started gluing a strip of fabric to the very top of the shade following the line of the shade. After the top layer was glued on, I glued a line a third of the way down the shade (horizontal) and then I used my hand to make sure the gathers stayed gathered and pressed the fabric onto the glue:
I then cut the excess fabric below the glue line so it wouldn't show when the light was on. I then repeated the above steps for each layer placing each new layer right on top of the bottom of the fabric where I glued the previous layer.
My now 7 year old (*sniffle*) is my amazing assistant.
When I finished my bottom layer, I glued the fabric right at the bottom rim of the lamp and then cut the fabric leaving about a 1/2 inch excess that I could later glue and tuck under:
To finish off the lamp, I hot glued a thin amount of glue right above the inside bottom rim of the shade. I then rolled my fabric and held in place until the glue cooled. I did this over and over for a neat finish.
The best part about this whole project is how the lamp looks at night turned on. My daughter LOVES it and it is so special for the both of us!
Thank you again to Kari at Ucreate for the project inspirations, and I can't wait to see everyone's finished projects! I know I'll want to do all of my lamps!
Have a wonderful week everyone! I have a really special post ready for Wednesday that you won't want to miss! Thank you for your sweet comments, emails and notes! I really appreciate your feedback!
Cheers!
