Laundry/Craft Room Revamp- Part 1

My laundry/craft room is not glamorous by any means, it's the laundry room after all. The laundry room is the one space in our home that most of us do not care to spend any energy or decorating dollars. However, I decided I would go ahead and share it here because over the years, we have done some inexpensive and creative things to really maximize the space. Maybe you too have issues with limited storage in your home, hopefully this post will inspire you to think about going outside the box (no pun intended) to maximize every inch of the storage space that you do have.


When we moved into our home more than 10 years ago, we just added a fresh coat of white paint to the laundry room and added the inexpensive wire shelving system to the walls that makes for easy shelf adjustments as needed:








Five years later, I begged my husband to figure out some creative way for me to store rolls of gift wrap, spools of ribbon and tissue paper and place it somewhere that I could easily utilize it without blocking anything. Thankfully, hubby came up with this brilliant idea of attaching brackets and metal closet rods and wire piping to the side walls:








The plastic brackets (I have no clue what they are normally used for) had two slot/holders, one round (perfect for the standard closet rod) and one square (not perfect for the closet rod) so he came up with utilizing a small copper pipe that fits and works perfectly… My hero!!









I decided last month that my laundry/craft room really needed to be finished once and for all. I forced myself to think about what we really needed in this space. Up until this point, stacked and clear storage containers with lids was not working for us. It created more disarray. I needed storage ideas that were small and functional but could hold a lot. So I ran to Lowe’s and stumbled across these fabulous huge plastic bins for $6.00 each!





Yep, after some deep soul searching in the storage aisle at Lowe’s, I finally admitted to myself that no matter how cute and temptingly beautiful some of those fabric storage boxes are, I’m a tosser (gasp!!). Ultimately, I need a boring huge plastic bin that I can shoot Mod Podge into from the three point line.




I also picked up two Husky fabric tool carriers at Lowe's for $15.00 each, perfect for my thousands of paint brushes, paint and tools and other stuff. What’s great about these is when I have a project, I can just grab the whole thing and run without tearing the laundry room upside down!










After I found my new (and cheap) storage pieces and got the room organized, I wanted to add a little color and fun without spending much. I know, I know, it’s a laundry room (hubby rolls eyes), but to me it’s blah and a blank space that I can get creative. I couldn't paint the walls because of the shelving system, so I added a touch of color in other ways.

After wanting to make some subway art over the last year but not having the right space for it, I thought I would give it a try for the laundry room. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as planned but this did:

Bound and determined to make my subway art, I finally accomplished it on this interlocking floor mat:





This floor mat was so easy to make and I love what a fun pop it added to the room, not to mention that it cost me around $25.00 to make. I decided to do a separate post on the tutorial for the painted floor mat, which can be found here (Revamp-Part 2).


Lastly, I made a quick magnetic board for easy access to the things I use daily (hammer, pliers, scissors) by cutting a sheet of tin, wrapping in fabric and placing in a frame. Hubby hung it with toggle bolts so I could load it up:







I am so happy that I finally finished this room. It has been driving me crazy for years and by taking a little extra time to think through my storage needs, I created a lot of extra space. Yay, I can continue to accumulate more craft supplies (hubby rolls eyes)!
